First World War

The sad necessity of war brought with it huge advances in all sectors of engineering: from the development of the tank to the creation of communication lines to the front. Engineering also contributed on the home front: from the development of artificial limbs to manufacturing munitions. IMechE Members and staff went to the front and worked on new technologies behind the scenes. IMechE Headquarters at 1 Birdcage Walk was requisitioned.

Our exhibition Engineers at War: From Home Front to Battle Front explores these themes in depth.

During the War, IMechE published a Journal listing war deaths and war-related activity but it also shows how life carried on. Our full Honour Roll is available.
