Julian Seymour Tritton (1889-1979)
President of the Institution of Locomotive Engineers
Julian Seymour Tritton was born in Calcutta, India, the son of Sir Seymour Biscoe Tritton, engineer and former President of the Institution of Locomotive Engineers. Tritton was educated at Rugby School and King's College London. He gained his practical engineering experience from the Vulcan Foundry locomotive works, Armstrong and Whitworth and Willians and Robinsons.
Tritton gained a year's experience working on the inspection staff at Rendal, Palmer and Tritton before moving to India to work at first as the Assistant Locomotive Superintendent for the Bombay, Baroda and Central India Railway before becoming their District Locomotive Superintendent.
In 1918 Tritton was commissioned into the Royal Engineers working in relation to military railways and then as an officer in charge of the Kohat-Thal Frontier Line during the Afghanistan campaign.
In 1920 Tritton re-joined the firm of Rendal, Palmer and Tritton in charge of a special department dealing with the design and inspection of railway and harbour works plant. In October 1928 Tritton was tasked with being in charge of establishing the firm's branch office in India.
He died in 1979 at the age of 89.
