William Cyril Williams (1889-1959)
President of the Institution of Locomotive Engineers
William Cyril Williams was born in London in 1889.
He was educated at Priory House School in Clapham, England and gained his technical education via evening classes at the Durban Technical College in South Africa whilst undertaking an apprenticeship with the Natal Government Railway in Durban.
Subsequently he worked in the offices of the Assistant Superintendent Mechanical Engineer for South African Railways in Bloemfontein and Durban before moving to become a Junior Engineer and then Assistant Engineer in Johannesburg. During the First World War he served in France as a Captain in the Royal Engineers for the 2nd Army Railways.
In 1919 he travelled to the USA and Canada as an inspecting engineer for the South African Railways before returning to South Africa as the Assistant to the Superintendent of Motive Power.
In 1923 Williams moved to London to open a branch office of the locomotive firm Beyer, Peacock and Company. His principle duties in this role were to develop the Garratt locomotive and introduce it throughout the world. In 1930 he was appointed London Manager Beyer, Peacock and Company.
