Charles Edward Williams (1873-1955)

ILE Obituary:
Charles Edward Williams C.B.E., was the Chief Inspecting Engineer of what was the Crown Agents for the Colonies from 1922 to 1934.
He was educated at Llandovery College and received his early training as a locomotive engineer at the works of the Vulcan Foundry Ltd. where subsequently he served as Assistant Works Manager. After holding the position of Resident Inspector in the United Kingdom for the New Zealand and Western Australian Railways he was appointed as an Assistant Engineer in the Works Department of what was the Crown Agents for the Colonies in 1900. In 1901, he went to Robert Stephenson & Company’s Darlington Works as Assistant Manager returning to what was the Crown Agents in 1904 as Assistant Head of the Engineering Inspection Department, receiving the title of Deputy Chief Inspecting Engineer in 1920.
During the First World War he served in the Ministry of Munitions in various capacities, latterly taking over charge of the Engineering Inspection Department, with the rank of Major, Royal Engineers.
During his service with the Crown Agents he visited Nigeria and Palestine in connection with the layout of the new railway workshops at Ebute Metta, Nigeria, and Haifa, Palestine.
Mr. Williams took a keen interest in the Institution’s affairs, having been elected a Member in 1921, a Member of Council in 1922 and President for the Session 1933-1934.
He died at the age of 82 on 8th November 1955.
