                        Model of the hammer made at Bridgewater Foundry, James Nasmyth's Works in Patricroft, Manchester. First conceived as a means of making the paddle-shafts of the 'Great Eastern' vessel in 1839. The model incorporates the self-acting mechanism patented on 26 June 1847.
