1 Artefacts Artefacts View key items from our rich collection of objects and models online, including some in 360 degrees. Included are objects on display at 1 Birdcage Walk such as models by Cherry Hill and a First World War car made by prisoners of war. Other items are non-display objects from our archive store, such as George Stephenson’s railway tokens and a working steam hammer forged by James Nasmyth’s works. For the first time we are able to showcase these objects online.

Nameplate 'Jacques IV'.A paper describing an earlier design of engine, 'Description of the steam road roller used in Paris', by E Gellerat, in Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, vol 20, 1869, p.101-118 and plates 12 -16.The model is presented in its original blue livery. With two plaques, one describing the model, the other 'CH 1995'.Scale: 1/16th and 3/4 inches to 1 foot.
6 Model of the "Rocket" locomotive Model of the "Rocket" locomotive Tender model of the original designed and built by Stephenson for the Rainhill speed trials on the Liverpool to Manchester Railway, 1829. By Dr John Bradbury-Winter, 1932.Model complete with firebox, boiler, chimney, driving wheels, hub and tyres, wooden water barrel, cylinder, spokes and felloes. The hubs of the wheels are engraved 'R Stephenson & Co, Newcastle Tyne' as on the original engine.Scale: 3/4 inch to 1 foot
