Possibly of Damaseus origin with imitation Kufic writing on the lid and decorative borders. Belonged to James Watt. Inscription on inner lid: "Carried for many years by Watt given by him during his last illness to my father, Rector of Handsworth who attended him on his death bed and gave him the sacrament according to the rites of the Church of England - Born at Greenock 1736 - died at Heathfield, Handsworth, Staffordshire, August 25 1819 - Richard Lane Freer". |
