Leicester and Swannington Railway

One of England's earliest railways, being opened on 17 July 1832 to bring coal from collieries in west Leicestershire to Leicester.

The items are highlights from the collection of Clement Edwin Stretton, a prolific writer (often in "The Engineer") who wrote a popular book on locomotive history. Originally a civil engineer, having been articled as an apprentice, his passion was the railways and he was a consulting engineer. From 1878-1879 he was Lord Mayor of Leicester.
