William Armstrong

Co-founder of the Armstrong Whitworth manufacturing company, 1st Baron Armstrong was a major figure. He was also an eminent scientist, inventor and philanthropist. He and Richard Norman Shaw, built Cragside where Armstrong developed a system of domestic hydroelectricity. He was the first engineer to join the House of Lords, in part because he passed his gun patents to the government; he is concerned to be the inventor of modern artillery.
