Shin was Director of Ishikawajima Shipbuilding and Engineering Company, Japan during the 1890s, building on his training as a naval architect. He was also Director of an electric lighting company. He also acted as a patent lawyer, it was this which probably bought him to London as part of the Japanese Embassy Delegation.
He and Bunji Mano were our first Japanese members.
