Sir Frederick Henry Royce

Co-founder of Rolls-Royce motor car company, he led the design for the firm. In 1878 he started an apprenticeship with the Great Northern Railway. After 3 years he moved to a tool-making company in Leeds, before joining the Electric Light and Power Company, London. He moved to their Liverpool office in 1882 working on street and theatre lighting. In 1884 he entered a partnership with Ernest Claremont to form FH Royce and Company, they made domestic electric fittings, and then dynamos and electric cranes.The company was re-registered in 1899 as Royce Ltd. A declining market and increase of competition led Royce to manufacture motor cars. One of these cars was sold to a friend of Charles Rolls, he then introduced the pair.
