"The model shown in miniature is about on thirty-fivfth of the actual size of the largest individual device ever produced by the rubber industry anywhere in the world. A numbe rof these units, set in line for wave control, will reduce a 6 foot wave to approx 1 foot. Each unit consists of a pneumatic pontoon weighing nearly 11 tons. The pontoon's multiplied heavy rubberised cotton deck is made up into four capacity chambers of 7,000 cubic feet each.
Each of these four chambers must maintain its individual pressure for at least 7 days. The outer chamber has a pressure of 1 lb; the second, 2 lbs; the third, 3 lbs; and the fourth, 4 lbs.
The whole unit is 200 feet long and 25 feet high. It is clamped with 500 bolts and channel irons to a 700 tons concrete keel, with anchorage to the sea beds at the end.
When a number of these units are set in line broadside to the waves, the waves strike the outer chambers which may ride the punch. If, however, the wave is extremely heavy, the pressure is transmitted to the second, third or fourth chambers, which, with the pendulum action of the 700 tons concrete keel, will reduce a 6 feet wave to approx 1 foot". 3 Jul 1945.
