Meetings were usually held at Institution headquarters (10 Victoria Chambers then 19 Victoria Street, London) but occasionally in the regions. Items of note include: proposal to hold meeting at the International Exhibition, Paris; railway investments for example, Taff Vale Railway; support in establishing an engineering department at University College, Cardiff; tribute to Sir Joseph Whitworth; founding an Imperial Institute in the colonies; funding Marine-Engine Trials; views on Boiler Registry and Inspections Bill; discussions regarding Indian Members; contact with Institution of Civil Engineers over proposed visit of American engineers; and discussions with Gustav Eiffel, Societe des Ingenieurs Civils on the Institution's visit to Paris.
