Robert Arthur Riddles (1892-1983)
President of the Institution of Locomotive Engineers
Robert Arthur Riddles was born in Sussex, England in 1892 and received his technical education with the Mechanic's Institute at Crewe whilst undertaking a practical apprenticeship with the London and North Western Railway at their Crewe locomotive works.
During the First World War, Riddles served with the Royal Engineers as an Officer in charge of Aerodrome construction.
After the First World War Riddles returned to the London and North Western Railway at Crewe working in various roles and departments throughout his career including at various stages being in charge of: plant and buildings; the progress and inspection department and reorganisation of the works at Crewe. In 1928 he was appointed Assistant Works manager at Derby and in 1931 he took up the same position at Crewe. By 1933 he had been appointed as Locomotive Assistant to the Chief Mechanical Engineer at Euston and two years later he was promoted to Principal Assistant to the Chief Mechanical Engineer.
Riddles died in 1983.
