James Nasmyth used this volume largely as a sales and demonstration tool for potential clients. It contains hundreds of drawings and notes for work proposals made for assorted engineering companies and individuals, usually named, in all branches of mechanical engineering. This volume is the "Scheme Book" referred to in James Nasmyth Engineer: an autobiography, ed. Samuel Smiles (London, 1883).
