Watch arguably our finest model working.
It was made between 1893 and 1910 by optometrist E. J. Windsor, based upon visits to Woolwich Arsenal and research in machine catalogues such as those produced by Whitworth and Company. It is belt-driven from a horizontal steam engine, with an overhead travelling crane; it is scaled 1 inch: 1 foot.
Donated by Lady Maxim in memory of Sir Hiram Stevens Maxim, it is on view in our Library at 1 Birdcage Walk.
Recent conservation work allowed us a rare chance to see the model in close detail, without its case. Our Archivist photographed the experience.
