On 17 October 1956 Queen Elizabeth II opened the world's first commercial nuclear power plant at Calder Hall Power Station, Cumbria. She was joined by Lord Christopher Hinton, lead designer of the site, and more than 40 scientists and statesmen who gathered for the occasion.
