"The Miners' University"
A most successful experiment has been the Ashington Colliery Continuation School founded in 1920 by Ashington Coal Company of Newcastle/Tyne. From the ranks of boys employed in the pits they have filled nearly all their vacancies for Mine Officials. Each selected boy goes to school for two days a week and is paid as if he had been to work. At a certain stage he is eligible for the Mine Manager's Course. The School consists of about 80 boys in the charge of 2 whole-time teachers, and is run jointly with the Education authorities, 4 Apr 1936.
