Ivory blade with a tortoise shell covered handle. With engraved name plates for 'G Stephenson' and 'W Guest'. The handle contains four steel blades, one of which is broken. Makers stamps reveal that the knife was probably sent new blades to the cutlers 'William Rogers celebrated cutlery', ' Osbourne and Sons' and 'No 117 Norfolk Street, Sheffield'. The knife was given by George Stephenson's widow to Mr and Mrs Guest in Chesterfield. Mrs Guest was sister of Mr John R Allport, Birmingham, whose widow gave the knife to Mr SW Challen. |
