The "Steam Elephant" Traction Engine was the ninth model created by Cherry Hill. Her interpretation was based upon Patent No. 1575 granted in 1860, which was submitted by James Taylor & Son of Britannia Works, Birkenhead. The engine was exhibited at the Great London Exposition of 1862. She carried out additional research using sources located at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and the London Science Library. The project took approximately 4,000 hours to complete, and Cherry was awarded the Aveling Barford Trophy in 1984. Scale 1/16th and 0.75 inches to 1 foot; weight in case 14.5kg; measurements 13 1/4 x 7 7/8 x 9 3/4in Nameplate reads 'James Taylor, Engineer Birkenhead, Steam Elephant, 1862' |
