The models of the Andrew Barclay Traction and Boring Engine were started by Cherry Hill in 1990. They are primarily based upon details contained in the No. 646 patent of 1862 - granted to Barclay for two traction engines - and the No. 668 patent of 1863 awarded for the boring and winding engine. Cherry further consulted reference materials held at the Glasgow University Archives, London Science Library and the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, amongst others. The project took 9,000 hours to complete, including research, design, construction and painting. The models were the 14th and 15th created by Cherry, and received the Bradbury Winter Memorial Trophy in 1998. Scale 1/16th and 0.75 inches to 1 foot; weight in case 20kg; measurements 23 x 6 1/4 x 9 1/4in Nameplates read 'Andrew Barclay, Kilmarnock, North Britain, Traction Engine, 1862' and 'Andrew Barclay, Kilmarnock, North Britain, Boring & Winding Engine, 1863' |
